The Education Foundation is honored to support the Weekend Food Program, a collaborative effort between five local churches and the MCPASD.
The program serves students at all six MCPASD elementary schools: Elm Lawn, Northside, Park, Sauk Trail, Sunset Ridge and West Middleton. The hope is to eventually expand the program district-wide.
Each week, volunteers from St. Luke’s, St. Bernard’s, St. Martin’s, West Middleton Church and Middleton United Church of Christ plan menus, purchase food and pack bags of food. On Fridays, they deliver food to elementary schools, where Student Services staff make sure it gets into participating students’ backpacks for them to take home.
The program provides nutritious and easy-to-prepare food to ensure that children get enough to eat over the weekend when they’re not able to depend on school meals.
It’s one of many local programs that addresses food insecurity. To participate in the Weekend Food Program, families sign up through their schools’ social workers, who ensure that families in need are able to access a variety of community resources.
